21 May 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 21st May [1882]. Alice came from Lang. Hse & she & I went together to church at St James’ Piccadilly. We then returned to Savile Row to fetch Henry & walked all 3 to Queen Anne St. Alice went on to Lang. Hse & Henry & I lunched with B & Edward. At 3 Hy & I got a hansom & went to pay visits. We went to Mrs Austen’s Henry’s old aunt. We found the De Gex’s just coming away. Mrs A. seemed glad to see us but not to realize who we were. She asked abt every 2 minutes how long we shd be away abroad when we told her we intended to start for Holland on Wedy. Henry wrote down something about her beautiful collection of water colours at wh she said she did not remember she had any—the fact being that she has one of the finest collections in England. Prouts, Benningtons, Stanfield &c &c We went to see Lady Eastlake who was very well & we met a Mr Potter calling there with a very beautiful girl a Miss Potter, his niece. He is a radical & a great friend of Bright’s but he was very indignant at the state of affairs in England & was very angry at the attempt of the Govt to force the Reform Club to change its arrangements merely because 2 brothers of a cabinet Minister had been black balled at their election—I mean Mr Chamberlain’s brothers– We went on to call on Mrs Drummond & were taken up to see Mrs Kay who is better & on the sofa in a sitting room near her own room. We went on to call on Lady Hammond who was at home– Met there Mr Clarks Jervoise who gave me a commission to get him a frame from Venice. We went finally to see Lady Stanhope & sat a few minutes with her & then I left Henry at Miss Duff Gordon’s & went home. He returned soon after me. Morelli, Sir Wm & Lady Gregory, Mr Cartwright, Arthur Burr, Mr Burton dined with us & we had a pleasant evening & the gentlemen had a long talk after dinner while Lady G. & I had a gossip.
