22 May 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 22nd May [1882]. After breakfast I walked out went to Hamilton House to see Ivor. He was not in so I went in to Cornelia & waited until Ivor came in & then we had a talk abt the things Cortelazzo is having made for him. Henry joined us & we left the designs for Ivor to consider & to let us know. I went to pay some bills at Sotheran &c & then home. Found Maria there waiting for me & she stayed to luncheon. Blanche called for me & took me out in her carriage & I came home at 5 & found a whole bevy of Layards waiting to see me. Morelli, Blanche & Edward dined with us. Abt 7 Henry & I were talking when we heard 3 loud knocks on the street door. I told Henry to go & see for I was sure it was Morelli & so it was. When he came up we asked him why he knocked in that way & he said he had once been told to be sure & knock 3 times on a door in London that one knock meant a beggar, two knocks for meat & provisions & 3 knocks for a visitor. This amused us vastly. Monty returned home.
