26 May 1882 — Rotterdam
Friday. 26th May [1882]. We breakfasted at 9 & at 10 walked to the Museum to see the Picture Gallery. A nice little collection of Dutch school—some nice portraits by Nason– Very nicely arranged & well kept. Went back to Hotel & hired a carriage & drove round the town to see it. Picturesque houses high with one gable & pullies to the top windows to hoist up merchandise—many of the old houses leant forward & were much out of the perpendicular. Abt 1.30 we managed to get our driver to understand we wanted to return to the Hotel. Dined at 2 & at 3 went to the station & took our places by 3.35 train for the Hague. We got there at abt 5 & went to Hotel Paulez. We found very nice rooms a capital sitting room & a bedroom next it. Got a boy to show us the way to the B. Legation & left cards on the Stuarts & then walked home to the Hotel. Had tea at 7 up in our room– Played cribbage in evening.
