5 June 1882 — Berlin | |
Monday. 5th June [1882]. The weather was dull & it rained hard all day; we were bemoaning having to go to Potsdam when Col. Villiers came to take us to the Museum wh was to be opened on purpose for us. We explained that we had to go to Potsdam when another telegram arrived putting it off till dinner tomorrow night to our joy as the rain got every moment worse and the country wd have been too melancholy. Henry & I went off to the Museum wh is not open on Mondays to the public being reserved as a cleaning day. We went to the private door & were recd by the Director of Antiquities Herr & he took us thro’ the Bronze rooms—the Helderscheim treasury—the greek vases &c &c & this took us a long time just to look thro’. Henry was much struck with some rude terra cotta votive tablets wh were quite new to him & had archaïc designs on them. We walked in the pelting rain a few steps from the Museum with the Director to the out house where the Olympian casts are being set up & arranged. They are most interesting the pieces are so numerous that the work of reconstruction must be something like a child putting a puzzle together. The Director of this department, a very nice looking young man Herr showed us over the casts & was most polite. He said he had been 5 years at Athens superintending the work & had suffered much with fever. We returned to the Hotel to lunch at abt ¼ 2. At 3.30 Henry & I drove out & called on Bernadine Benamar & found her in– Sat with her some time & her baby of 10 months was introduced to us. We then drove to Bismark Strasse 2 to see Lady Walsham & had tea with her. The Danish Minister’s wife was also calling & told us abt our journey to Copenhagen. Dressed & went to dine at the English Embassy at 7. Met the French Ambr & his wife (de Courselles), Ct Hatzfeldt, Mr & Mrs Crowe, the Walshams, Mr Townley, Ct & Css de Benamar. A good dinner. Hatzfeldt took me in & I sat between him & Col. Villiers– A good dinner & pleasant. After dinner the Austrian Ambr [illegible word] came in. We left early as the Ampthills had to return to Potsdam by train. Cribbage. | |
