4 June 1882 — Berlin
Sunday. 4th June [1882]. I went to church with Hill to Mon Bijou where there is an English chapel. Coming out we met Mr Townley who was kind eno’ to get us a cab. Got to the hotel abt 2 to 1. Had luncheon & Col. Villiers met us at 1.30 & took us to the train for Potsdam. On the platform we met Herr Busch Hatzfeldt’s predecessor & saw Genl. Waldersee who is to be Moltke’s successor. He is a very nice looking man of abt 40 with a most intelligent eye. Col. V. introduced Henry to Herr Busch & they stood talking while Col. V. & I walked abt looking out for the Walshams & Mr Townley who were going down by the same train. Seeing that the weather threatened to be so bad the Ampthills had telegraphed to us all to come down later for dinner but we only got the telegram at the last moment & so cd not put off. The Walshams got so late to the station that they had to get in at the end of the train & we did not meet till we reached Potsdam in abt ½ hour– Henry & I took a droshky & drove up to the Embassy, the others went down to the lake to prepare the boat to take us out. We found the Ampthills not expecting us were just going out driving—however Ld Ampthill remained at home to chat with Henry & Emily & I went down to the lake in the carriage. We found the 4 oared ready & the gentlemen rowed us about the lake. It was hot heavy & stormy weather & rain threatened. We went to the Peacock’s Isle—landed & walked abt a lovely garden & saw a small house built in the bad taste of the last century—a mock ruin. The Queen Louise was very fond of going to live there in perfect retirement & there was so little room for her suite that the gentlemen had to live in tents in the garden. We walked abt for ½ hour & then got into our boat to return to the land. Just as we started a boat full of royalties crossed over & landed at the land. We had a few large drops of rain on the way back but happily the storm passed over– We drove up to the Embassy & went in & prepared ourselves for dinner & then went up to the top of the little garden where there is a large arbour & there we dined. Ct Seckendorf the Crown Princess’ secy came to dine & that completed the party. The view from the garden was lovely & like a small view of Florence– From another corner it was like a miniature Rome. We sat in the garden till 9.30 then went down to the house had tea & went off to the station & got back to Berlin by abt 10.30. Cribbage & bed. We found a telegram on our return inviting us to lunch tomorrow at 2 at the Crown P. & Pss.
