3 June 1882 — Berlin
Saturday. 3rd June [1882]. Wrote letters– At 10 Mr Crowe came & took us to the Museum. We walked there & went first into the halls where the sculpture is to see the temple brought lately from Pergamos—most magnificent frieze representing the battle of the giants. We then went upstairs & went over one wing of the picture gallery. On the whole it was disappointing & the quality was less remarkable than the quantity– The old Italian pictures were mostly over cleaned, repainted & over varnished. We stayed till one oclock & then took a droshky & came back to the hotel & had lunch in the courtyard. Went up & wrote & rested. At 3 Emily Ampthill came to see us & was very nice & cordial & affectionate altho’ we had not met for years. When she was gone Henry & I took a droshky & drove to the Ministry to see Ct Hatzfeldt. He was in conference with the French Ambassador but he received us directly after & was very glad to see us. He is still Ambr at Consple & Under Sect for F.A. We left him & went to drive in the Thiergarten & went in to the Zoological garden & walked abt for an hour. The beasts are most wonderfully kept & there are very fine lions & tigers there. An excellent band was playing & lots of people sitting listening. We had to come back to the Hotel & dine at 6. At 7 Lady Walsham fetched us & she & Sir John & Mr Townley took us to hear Strauss’s operetta “Die lustige Krieg.” It was most amusing & the music was very pretty especially the Melanie Valse which came several times in the piece. It finished abt 9.30 & we went to the Walshams’ to supper. Ct Benamar came there also. While we were at supper we suddenly heard a rush of vehicles & bells & we found it was fire engines assembling to put out a fire abt 5 doors off from where we were. It was a very animated scene the bells & torches & rush of engines. We returned to our suppers & went back to the hotel. Played cribbage & went to bed.
