2 June 1882 — Berlin | |
Friday. 2nd June [1882]. We sat in doors writing letters all the morning & expecting the Walshams who did not come. At 1 we went down to the courtyard & had luncheon & we met Mr Foster (Director of Att. Bank at Consple) coming to see us. He sat & talked to us while we lunched; very soon we were joined by Lord Ampthill & Col. Villiers (his bro: in law) who sat with us—also later Lady Walsham. Ld A. did not remain long & Col. V. & Lady Walsham went off & promised to return for us at 3.30, which she did & took us in a carriage to write our names on the Crown Princess & then to the Brit. Chancery in search of Mr Crowe whom Henry wanted to see. He had gone to our hotel to find us so we returned there & dropped Henry & Lady Walsham took me to leave a card on Hatzfeldt & then to call on Css of Benamar (Bernadine Aylton I had known so intimately at Madrid & who has since married Señor Merry y. Colon Ct of Benamar. She received us in her dressing gown in her bedroom not being well. She has one baby a girl of a few months. She still is pretty but very stout. We sat talking some while & then left her & went to Lady Walsham’s house to tea. After tea we went to the Arcade in search of a fan & at last I got one wh was pretty good. She then brought me home. Dressed & went to dine with the Walshams at 7.30– Met Mr Townley, Mr J. Woodford & a Mr Carew. The latter was very faint when he arrived & had to go away during dinner. He has lately lost his wife, née a Miss Harris & has been very cut up.
