1 June 1882 — Amsterdam | |
Thursday. 1st June [1882]. We left Amsterdam by 3.55 train for Berlin. Had to change at Emmerich the German frontier & have luggage examined. Then we went to Oberhausen & changed again into the Paris direct express to Berlin. There we ordered our dinner & at Dortmund a charming little tray a piece was handed in to us in the carriage with soup—beefsteak & potatoes & veal cutlet & asparagus—bread, wine, salt, pepper. At Hamm the waiter appeared for payment 2.50 each tray & carried off the trays. At Hanover I got some coffee. At 10.15 we arrived at Berlin where Sir John Walsham kindly came to meet us & took us to the Central Hotel which is the only place he cd get us rooms—Berlin being so full. We had tea & went to bed. | |
