7 June 1882 — Berlin | |
Wednesday. 7th June [1882]. We took a carriage & drove to the Museum to meet Herr Director Bode who showed Henry some small early Giottesque pictures he had in his private room– He also took us to another kind of magazine where there were seven pictures waiting to be hung. We went on leaving him to the Kunst Gerverbe Museum wh corresponds to our S. Kensington & was began under the protection of the Crown P. & Pss. It has only been open 4 or 5 months & has not many things in it but the building is splendid & beautifully decorated & filled up. We got back to the Hotel abt 1.30 & had some luncheon. At 3 took a cab to Lady Walsham’s. We found her at home & several lady colleagues calling on her who all talk very loud & fast & rather bewildered one. We walked to see the Franco Prussian War monument wh is a very ugly thing but has V. & Murano Co mosaics on it wh look very well. It was a very hot afternoon. We walked down the Linden shopping at Aschers to buy some books & then went back to the hotel as it was too hot & sultry to walk much. Sir John Walsham came to see us at 6. We had tea & at 7 set off to go to the Victoria Theatre where we saw a stupid piece “The Queen of Golconda.” The house was quite empty– Abt 2 boxes & ¼ of the stalls were full. We had 2 places in a box—it being the fashion to take separate places in the boxes & luckily had it all to ourselves. We got home abt 9.30 & had supper in the court yard. There Col. Villiers joined us with messages from the Ampthills to say Ld A. would show us over the Embassy tomorrow. We told Col. V. we had given up going to Dresden having had a letter from Monty saying he starts tomorrow for Norway & we had better join him quickly. So we decided to start for Copenhagen tomorrow. Cribbage. | |
