8 June 1882 — Berlin
Thursday. 8th June [1882]. Col. Villiers came for us at 10.30 & we walked with him to the Russian Ambassador’s Ct Saburow & left Henry to see his collection of Greek antiquities wh he collected while Minister at Athens & got away by stealth. He had a Russian gunboat station at the Piraeus & used to embark his treasures little by little at night there being a law against carrying antiquities out of the country. Col. Villiers & I walked on to Aschers to look for some more books, but failed to get what we wanted. Went to the Chancery where I sealed & directed my box of diamonds & left them to go by the next messenger to England. Walked on to the British Embassy where we found Henry with Ld Ampthill. He showed us over the house wh is a magnificent & very convenient one & cost Ld A. £18,000 to furnish. Luckily he has a brother a Duke who helped him. Col. Villiers took us to Langlet a restaurant next door & gave us lunch & also Ld Ampthill. There later Hatzfeldt joined us. At 2 we took leave of Hatzfeldt & Ld A. & returned to our hotel to finish packing & make ready to start. Mr G. Bunsen came to call & sat with us ½ hour. At 3.15 we left the Central Hotel & went to the Hamburg station. The Walshams, Mr Townley & Col. Villiers very kindly came to see us off. We went by express train to Hamburg. There we had to change from one station to another close by. We had an hour to wait & so dined at the station. We began to play cribbage as soon as we started off—but in abt ½ hour we arrived at Attone & had to change again on to another line to go to Kiel. To Kiel we got abt 12 & got a droshky & drove to the quay where the steamer was waiting. Went on board found our cabin ready for us. Had tea & laid down.
