9 June 1882 — En route to Copenhagen
Friday. 9th June [1882]. Arrived at Korsor abt 7 AM o’cl having had a perfect passage. We had to wait abt ½ hour for the train & at last went on again & got to Copenhagen abt 10.30. Mr Gosling (1st secy) met us at the station & brought me a bouquet of flowers. Went to Hotel d’Angleterre & had breakfast & then I rested while Henry went off to the Legation to see Mr Vivian. When he came back we went off to the Museum of Antiquities with a note to the Director Mr Warsaae & he received us most kindly– He remembered having met Henry at dinner some years ago at John Murray’s & he was delighted to see him. He speaks English perfectly & took us round his museum beginning from the stone age thro’ the bronze age down to the beginning of the modern era explaining every thing most clearly & with much dry humour & giving a most interesting & instructive lecture—so that altho’ I was very tired I was sorry when it was over. The museum is wonderfully rich & complete & is arranged in a perfect manner. There are wonderful gold ornaments & coffins containing the remains clothes & implements of ancient inhabitants of the North. Went back to the hotel—rested—dressed & went to dine at 7.30 at the Legation. Mrs Vivian is young & pretty & very delicate. Mr & Mrs Gosling & his two daughters, Mr Greville (secy) & the Danish Minister of War & Marine. We had a good dinner & the house is very well montré. The house is full of pretty things & very nicely arranged. We retired early being tired.
