10 June 1882 — Copenhagen
Saturday. 10th June [1882]. Mr Gosling came to fetch us having promised to take us to some antiquity shops. We went to 3 & looked at some silver things but did not see any thing very remarkable to buy except a silver coffee urn wh I took rather a fancy to. We went to the Palace to see the picture gallery– There were yards of canvass but nothing very remarkable except a modern picture by Bloch Christian IV in prison– Among the old pictures there were 3 or 4 Italian pictures wh had been good before they had been repainted & cleaned. Mr Gosling left us here & we went on to the Antiquity museum where we found Mr Warsaae & saw the remainder of the museum from the 10th century to our times. Then on to Thorwaldsen’s Museum wh greatly delighted us. Tho’ many of the things are only casts the whole collection is charming & one realises the man in a wonderful manner. Henry says that his Faun piping approaches nearer Greek art than any thing he knows of the present day. The chancery servant joined us here & as it rained got us a cab & took us to Mr Gosling’s house. It was nearly 2 & we lunched with the Gosling family. After lunch Mr & Mrs Vivian called for us in a waggonette & took us for a drive to show us the country round abt Copenhagen. We went by the Charlottenberg the Crown Prince’s country house nearly to Bernstorff the King’s house & back by another road– It was chilly & showery & I was very glad to get some hot tea when I got in to the Hotel. Went to dine at the Legation at 7. Met M & Mme Frankenstein (Austrian Minister), Mr Goldsmid (German chargé), Mr Hohenwart Aust. secy, Mr Greville, Miss Gosling, Mr Wedel the Danish permanent Un. Secy for F.A. The Austrian minister took me to table & I sat between him & Mr Vivian–
