16 June 1882 — Trondhjem
Friday. 16th June [1882]. Breakfasted at 10. Went out [with] Kjeldsberg & strolled abt the town. At 12 we went to see the cathedral wh is under repair & is a most magnificent & curious building of the Norman or Early English style. The shrine of St Olaf is most elegant & beautiful. Only the transept is now used for service the rest being under repair & much of it in a very ruinous state. The repairs will not be finished for 6 years. At the same time that we went over it there was the gt Norwegian poet Prof. Munch a white haired old gentleman. To our surprise Monty’s interpreter Siemonsen turned up this morng. It appears that 2 boxes were lost between London & Syltebo & Monty had sent him in search of them—one box containing fishg tackle was found but the other wh contained Monty’s clothes was still missing. At 3 Hill, Lady Agnes, I & Siemonsen went out shopping– We were a long time getting a few things & came home exhausted. Then Henry & I took a turn in search of old silver but did not find anything worth having. I bought myself cloth stuff for a fishing dress. We dined as last night at 8 & sat talking till past 10 in the ladies room– Then we took leave of the Daniells & went on board the steamer wh was to take us to Molde. Henry & I had a very good cabin & Hill went in the ladies’ cabin. We had a perfectly smooth passage to Christiansund being all the way in the fjords. We started at midnight.
