21 July 1882 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Friday. 21st July [1882]. Cast at the bank—got nothing– Painted. Dinner at 4. Went with Henry to Hunde in the eveng but had no sport. Only brought 2 small trout. Found Ld Rowton fishing at the Rest & John standing by. I suggested that John should take me out in the boat to try for trout. He took me to Lower Gredhus & down to the boat houses & I caught 2 good trout one 6 lb. & 4 lbs. Monty got some trout & also Ld Rowton. We did not come in to supper till 11.30 & I was so excited by my success that I agreed to be called at 7 tomorrow & go out for trout. Monty said he would have me called so I retired at once to bed– I was undressing when Monty called to me that I cd not go out tomorrow as John’s mother was dead. I was horrified & reproached myself for having kept John out when his mother was ill– Hill & I opened our doors & began to talk of it Hill saying the old women had been up here at 5 & she had shaken hands & we were becoming pathetic when shouts of laughter from below told us that it was a hoax & Ld Rowton coming up stairs caused Hill & me to bolt into our rooms & shut the doors.
