29 August 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 29th [August 1882]. Up at 8. Breakfast 9. First Italian lesson. Alice read aloud. I pasted in despatches. Cut out yellow satin curtain & Alice & I spent a long time placing old embroidered flowers on it to be eventually sewn on it. Lunch at 1– Practiced harmonium with Alice. Went out in gondola with Henry. Alice was to have come with us– Just as she was stepping into gondola her foot slipped & she went into water up to her knees & had to go in & change so we went without her to Trapolin to look for stuffs for covering chairs—on to Clarli in search of more old embroidered flowers for the yellow curtain & then walked to T. Morsi going in to Podio’s shop to rest. The gondola met us there & took us home. Tea. Gardened till dinner time. A great storm came up just abt 6 & it rained a good deal but it cleared up again & we were about to go out & take a row. It was windy & not very warm– Cribbage.
