12 October 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 12th October [1882]. The upstair carpets being put down we had to vacate them & determined to go out to see the Ducal Palace so we started abt 10.30. As we got there we saw the “Salamis” coming up & when we had been over the Palace we went to leave cards on the Capt. & to enquire for Lord Melgund whom it appears had landed at Brindisi. We found that Admiral Hoskins was on board but ill with lumbago. The Capt. (Broadman) came to the side & spoke to us himself. We then returned to lunch very hungry & tired. I did not go out again but Henry went back to the Salamis to beg Adl Hoskins to come & stay with us wh he said he wd do as soon as he was able to move. Css Marcello & Gino called. Mildred went out with Hill to buy a dress. We were all tired at night. We read in my room, Epictitus & Gatty’s Parables– I could eat no dinner & went to bed very early.
