11 October 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 11th October [1882]. Mildred came to read before breakfast. We had the drawing room carpets put down. Mr Malcolms gardener Ferdinando came with the plants I had been given yesterday & the belvedere became most beautiful. I spent a long time helping to arrange them. Modelled & Alice read aloud. Mildred German lesson– After lunch I modelled again & Mildred read some of Bonaparte’s life in French to me– Henry & Alice went out after lunch to buy a picture for Sir Wm Gregory at 3.30. They returned for Mildred & me & we went to Palazzo Gritti to see D. Ricardo Madrazo & he showed us Ricco’s & his own pictures wh they have been at. Ricco’s are all various views—clever but too chique– The trees & water are all spotted in. They look well at a distance but do not bear close inspection. Ricardo is painting a pretty scene of a girl swimming in the canal held by a rope by a woman—another woman is kneeling & trying to persuade another child to go into the water. The scene is in the door way of one of the old palaces with very pretty iron work in it. I think he has much more power than Ricco and more finish. We took a little row in the gondola & Mildred tried a little to row. Home at 5. T. Read in my room & the girls came in for a little while for me to read to them. Dined at 7.30. Henry took out the girls after dinner. I pasted despatches. Cribbage–
