10 October 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 10th October [1882]. Mildred came to my room to read her chapter with me before breakfast & we sat on talking until we found we had to hurry to dress & be down. Gave M. music lesson—& German. Modelled & Alice read aloud “Isabella” by Prescott. After lunch went to Murano in Mr Malcolm’s gondola with Mildred. Henry took Olga & Alice. We went over the new glass factory wh is to be ready by Novr. Went on to Signora Rolandi’s to hear the boy play the piano. Coming home Alice & Mildred changed places. We went straight to Mr Malcolms garden. He gave us bouquets & made me choose out some flower pots for a present. We came home by 5. I received 20 small birds thro’ Mr Malcolm’s kindness from India. Put them in the small cage– M. Imbert Gourbeyre the French Consul paid us a long visit & spoke English with much labour. He used a curious expression. It is disgraceful for the Italians—“meaning “una disgrazia.” Sent Olga home at 6. Had my mud bath & read aloud as last night. Henry heard that the Salamis is expected in tomorrow after all– Henry took Alice & Mildred to the Piazza after dinner. I remained at home & wrote letters & then he & I played cribbage.
