9 October 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 9th October [1882]. Modelled in the morning while Alice read– Gave Mildred music & German lessons. After lunch it cleared up to a most lovely day & we went out in gondola—left some cards & went on to the church of the Redentore to see the Located Bellinis in the sacrestia. We saw some Dominican monks there & the custode told us there were 60 of them in the convent. Went to Biondetti’s to see his collection of marbles & woods & the staircase he is making for the Franchetti house. He also showed us 2 pieces of stone cutting wh were in upright boxes. One of them was out of the perpendicular & was slowly tipping forward out of its box when Henry saw it & put out his hand & stopped it from killing old Biondetti who wd have been crushed by it—& also from breaking the fine pilaster with its marvellous carving representing the chase—birds—fish in a net & all in very high relief. Henry & Alice walked home from here. Mildred & I left cards on Mme Pilat & went home. Mme Hurtado & Idita & Olga Mocenigo came to tea. At 6 Mildred, Alice & I retired to my room to read. Mildred read aloud from Farrar’s “Seekers after God” & then I read one of Mrs Gatty’s “Parables from Nature.” We dined at 7.30 & intend doing so in future. Mildred played piano in eveng & then Henry & I played cribbage.
