8 October 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 8th October [1882]. Alice & Mildred went to church & met Henry after at the Picture gallery. I stayed at home & pasted despatches. Lunch at 1.30. Mr Oscar Browning called & brought a young Mr Brown with him. He is staying here in order to write a history of Venice– A nice quiet gentle blue eyed youth fair—& abt 28. He is said to be very clever & hard working. His mother is living with him. Mr & Miss Granville Berkeley called. The weather was dull & rain threatened, but we all went out in gondola. Passing the Pension Suisse we spied Lady Galway on the steps. So I landed & begged her to come & dine tonight. She said she would—& begged us to take her to the Piazzetta. There we left her & then we took a row round by the American Frigate “Lancaster” wh lay near the public gardens– We looked out for the “Salamis” wh is expected here with wounded from Egypt. Henry & Alice walked home from the Piazzetta– Mildred & I went to call on Mrs Bronson; we found her & a good many more calling amongst them Mme de Pilat who has just returned. Home by 5. Ld & Ly Alwyn Compton came to tea & we asked them up to the studio. At 7 Mildred & I retired to my room to read while I took my mud knee bath. Lady Galway dined with us & in the evening Mildred played & I sang & Lady G. helped me to transpose & seemed pretty jolly. She is leaving Venice on Tuesday she says–
