7 October 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 7th October [1882]. It thundered nearly all last night & the weather was none the better for it. I worked in the morng at the medallion & Signor Felici came in to superintend. Gave Mildred music & German lesson. She & Alice read aloud by turns while I worked. After lunch we all went out in gondola—landed at Piazza Manin & walked thro’ the Frezzaria to Piazza. Went to Podio’s & paid bill. Mildred & Alice amused themselves by flattening their noses at every shop window. Henry & I walked up & down the Square during the process. We met Olga Mocenigo walking then at 4.30 we came home– Just as we were getting into the gondola we saw D. Carlos getting into his. A good looking tall man with a bushy black beard– Home & had tea. On the way home we saw the Hurtados at their door. They had just returned from Florence & had been detained 16 days at Bologna by the floods. Finally they came by Verona. Olga came to see me abt 5.30 for ½ hour. Henry went to see Mr Brown. After dinner Mildred played piano until 9. when Alice, Henry & I went out to see Mr & Mrs Curtis at Palazzo Barbaro the 2nd floor of wh they have taken for 5 years & furnished very nicely. Met there Mr Pennington & Mrs Sargent a young artist who is making himself a reputation, Mr O. Browning & a few others whom I knew not. Home by 11–
