25 October 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 25th October [1882]. Modelled all the morning. Alice read to me. At 2 we went to the Arsenal to meet Commr Canevaro who was kind eno’ to show us over a large part of it. It was very interesting as a great many of the sheds & docks were still of the time of the old republic. There was a fine old room where the designs were made for the big ships but a much larger modern one had been made by the side of it, where the huge ironclads are made out. This room was 84 metres long. We saw the place where the Bucentaur used to be kept—& where a young Bucentaur is kept in wh V. Emanuel made his entry into Venice when the Austrians left. We saw a wonderfully long shed where the ropes used to be made. They are now all made at Castellamare & this rope walk is in disuse. We walked abt for 2 hours & had to asked to see the rest another day. It began to rain as we went home. T. Wrote letters. Mr Malcolm & Mme Hurtado & Idita also Mr Horatio Brown dined with us & left early. Cribbage.
