24 October 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 24th October [1882]. Modelled and Henry gave me an hour’s sitting. At 2 we all went out to St Marks to go up in the galleries that we might see the mosaics better and the places that are being restored. Formerly the restorations were done by our stabilimento but the Govt has now got a man from Rome & he has the mosaic taken down bit by bit & the missing pieces restored wh perhaps is a good way but it will take centuries to do it all—as 5 men work only. I could not stand as long as the others so I went down & sat in the church till they had seen all the galleries. Henry & Alice walked home, I & Mildred came back in the gondola. I went in to see Css Canevaro & asked her to arrange with her husband to take us tomorrow to the Arsenal. Home & finished sticking in despatches for Henry—glad to get it all finished for it had been a long work. Mildred read Farrar to us before dinner. Dined at 7 & Henry took the 2 girls to the Opera to hear Bello in Maschera– I remained at home & wrote letters.
