9 November 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 9th November [1882]. Dull weather. Gave Mildred her German lesson. Modelled while Alice read aloud. Recd a telegram from Css Marcello begging me to find her something else. I went out in the gondola with Henry & we went to Guggenheim’s. There we found rather a nice enamel box priced 140 fcs but wh he gave to us for 60 fcs so we carried it off. We met Mr Burton there & looked at some of Guggenheim’s things with him—there were 2 very ancient bas reliefs of animals wh had belonged to a fountain—one represents a lamb & sheep—the other a tigress & her whelps. Burton thinks they are Greek. We went on to Biondettis & took Mr Burton over his shop & then as it began to rain we returned home. Visit from Duke & Dss Di Noce– Later came Olga Mocenigo to tea & then Cte & Csse Hoyas & they remained a long time & made Mildred play the piano & the Css invited Mildred to go to her house to play with her governess. Played cribbage with Henry in evening. I sent off a box to Monza with Css Marcello’s enamel box & added a battersea tiger head which I begged also to be allowed to give the Queen as it is old English.
