11 November 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 11th November [1882]. German with Mildred. I got Henry to sit to me & Mr Burton to come up & superintend & criticize & I made some great progress towards the finish. Henry & Mr Burton went after lunch to see Fabris’ pictures wh are for sale– I with Mildred & Alice came later to the Piazzetta & then walked to a shop near Bauer’s where Mildred bought a lot of old stamps for her brother’s collection. We then returned to the Piazza & there were joined by Mr Burton & Henry. The band was playing & we walked up & down– The girls walked home with Mr Burton & Henry & I went home in gondola calling at the Stab: VM on our way. Just as we got in our gondola we met Ct Canevaro who said he was coming to us at 5. We stopped to leave Henry’s card on D. Carlos as he had left a card on me– He left a card as “El duque de Madrid” but it appears on some he leaves one with simply “Carlos” under a royal crown. The porter was anxious to make Henry write his name in a book but Henry wd only leave a card to his great rage. Ct Canevaro came to tea & then his wife & Mlle Cozzi joined him– Ct Mocenigo of St Stae & his 2 girls came so we had quite a party. Mr & Mrs Howard Vincent & Mr Horatio Brown dined with us. Olga Mocenigo came in the eveng. I had invited 2 or 3 more but they were all engaged. The Vincents are on their honeymoon trip. She is very rich, was Miss Moffatt—her father a tea merchant– She is slight & has pretty dark hair– He is good looking has rather a swagger—but is clever & pleasant.
