2 December 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 2nd December [1882]. I was working away at my curtain when Css Hoyas came & brought her father to see our pictures. Henry showed them to him & I took Css Hoyas upstairs to see my studio & she sat there a bit talking to Maria. When they were gone Maria finished reading the Excursion to me– Mr Colnaghi came to lunch & then he & Henry went out together to buy a marble column for Mr Newton & Brit. Museum. Maria & I went to the Piazza & walked abt under the Procuratie. It was very cold & snowed hard. Met Ct Canevaro, P. Metternich & Olga Mocenigo & they walked with us. Mildred & Alice were also in Piazza having gone there on foot. Henry & Mr Colnaghi joined us & Maria & I went back in the gondola. We left Mr Colnaghi at Mr Mereweather’s & went home—& I sewed again till tea time. Wrote letters till dinner. Mr Colnaghi dined. I played the harmonium in evening.
