1 December 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 1st December [1882]. I sat on the floor a long time working at the seams of my large yellow portierè while Maria read aloud to me. At ¼ to 1 I went off to lunch with old Mrs & Mr Horatio Brown. The weather was cold & blowy & there were quite waves in front of the Balbi Valier house where the Browns live, so that I could scarcely land. Met at lunch Mr & Mrs Curtis, Mr Tindal & Mr Stewart– Mrs Brown had the mezzanin which opens on to a piece of garden, her great delight– At 3 I left & went to the Frari to meet the rest of our party– I went & sat waiting for an hour in the church & at last it was so cold I set off home & when I got home I found the others were still at the Archives & soon they came having been obliged to walk. Olga Mocenigo came to tea. Mr Colnaghi the Florence Consul Genl. had called in my absence and Henry had asked him to dinner. I played harmonium a little & cribbage.
