24 December 1882 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 24th December [1882]. There was a thick fog but nevertheless I went to church in the morning & then stayed in till 4 o’cl. Mr Malcolm came to see us in the afternoon & stayed a long time chatting. At 4 he went away & I went to Mme Hurtado’s where there were a great many people amongst them the Canevaros & Andriana. I came home with the latter & then she went to the Pss of Montenegro & came on here & Mlle Cozzi, Ersilia Canevaro also came to tea. Henry came down to tea & for once left his work. When Andriana was gone Ersilia tried over some songs to harmonium accompts & left late. At 9 Henry & I went to Andriana’s where we found the Canevaros, Mocenigos of St Stae, Mme Capodistria & a few men– Henry played whist, Ersilia sang a little & we all talked a great deal. Made the acquaintance of M. Rodostomos—who told me he always went to London for the season– He knew the Sir G. Bowen family—the Wolffs &c & was very agreeable & chatty. He is rather a good looking man & wears too prodigiously long whiskers.
