14 February 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 14th February [1883]. Breakfast in bed & up rather late. Finished making armchair cover & talked to Alice. lunch at 1.30 & Alice went away home– Henry & I drove to see Lady Eastlake. Found her & Miss Lewin & sat talking some time with them. Afterwards we went to call on Mrs Thomson Hankey & found her at home– As it was pouring cats & dogs we then came home– Had tea—worked, read. Went to dine with the Misses Duff Gordon. Met Sir Fred Leighton, Mr Browning, Mr & Lady Augusta Noel, M. & Mme Blumenthal. Mr Noel took me to dinner & I had Browning on my right. I found Mr Noel was a great friend of Mr Lawrence Oliphant’s & we had much talk about him. He seemed to have a rather low opinion of L.O’s character altho he said he was most attractive & fascinating. He thought that Mr Harris, whose sect he had joined had done him much good for the time but that L.O. had never been really very serious in his Harris sect as Mrs O. had been– In the eveng a few people came in– At 10.30 we went to Lady Granville’s party. There were a great many people there– Every body one knew asked me abt the reports of our going to Rome wh was rather trying.
