13 February 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 13th February [1883]. Monty arrived by last night’s mail train & I had a talk with him while he breakfasted. The last time we had seen each other was at Syltebo in July when we left him there to return ourselves to Eng. He only came up to town for a few hours & returned to Bere in afternoon. Lunched at 1.30. Henry went directly after to meeting at Nat: Gallery. Fred & Ida Layard called & sat some time with me—then Lady (Coutts) Lindsay called & was very nice & begged me to come & see her & hinted at her troubles in wh I cannot but sympathise with her immensely—as she found her husband living with a model for the last 10 years—having 3 children—& as she cd not bear it she separated from him with the 2 girls– At 2.30 I went to Blanche’s to help her with her Play & remained behind the scenes keeping the children quiet & bringing them on at the right moment. It went off splendidly & the piano being in the front made it perfect. Tea & coffee afterwards. Mama was there amongst others & she showed me a letter from a friend in Rome who said Lady Paget had told her they were leaving Rome & Henry was going there. I dont understand her motive in saying what is not a fact. Brought Alice Du Cane home with us. She went with us to dine with the Higford Burrs. Met the Erskine Mays, Henry Reeves, Mrs Poynter, Gregorys, Mr Clare Ford– The Squire took me down & I had Sir Thomas E. May next me– After dinner had a long talk with Lady May & she was very friendly.
