27 February 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 27th February [1883]. Went to Grosvenor Gallery with Henry directly after lunch to see Alma Tademas’ collection of pictures & Cecil Lawson’s. I did not care much for the latter they seemed to me too sketchy & incomplete & there were freaks in composition wh were not happy– I delighted in many of Tademas & wd have liked to possessed some of his intensely sunny Roman subjects especially “Antony & Cleopatra” & also a small picture of a Roman lying on a bench making love to a girl by his side. Went to fetch Mrs Rate & made her go out with me while I left cards. Home at 5. Genl. Crealock came to tea. We dined with Dr & Mrs Wm Smith, met the Henry Reeves (Edin: Review), Sir Hy & Miss Thompson, Higford Burrs, Browning, Mrs Ford &c. Dr Smith took me to dinner & I sat between him & Sir Hy Thompson. Talked much with Sir Henry about Tadema—3 of the pictures at the Grosvenor are Sir Henry’s property. He told me that Tadema came first to England to put himself under Sir H’s treatment & Sir Henry begged him to pay him his fee in the shape of a picture. That picture was shown at Paris & valued & ensured at £2500 & is now worth £5000. There was also great talk of Sir Hy’s system of dieting people Dr Wm Smith being a living example of the benefits of it. “Whole meal bread” was shown & tasted & Sir Henry said he wished Henry would try it. We left early & went in to Thomson Hankey’s & found the Gregorys, the Ponsonby Fanes &c had been dining there.
