28 February 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 28th [February 1883]. Maria & Mrs Austin came after Ethel Ponsonby’s wedding to see me & remained to lunch– Mrs A. Bagot came in from the same place– Mrs Burr also called, so we were a large party. Mrs Burr did not stay to lunch. Mrs Bagot did, & said she came to warn me that Lady Paget was putting about a report that Henry was such a bad man that he made me go & dine with Mme Castellani who was a very bad woman &c. After lunch I & Henry drove out together we went to see Mrs Austen & found her as usual only rather weaker– Went to Nat. Gallery to see some of the late purchases & paid Mr Burton a visit in his room. Left some cards & home at 5. The Gregorys dined with us & Sir Arthur Otway who was not expected as we had asked him for next Wed. However we were all the more delighted to have him & had a pleasant eveng & all adjourned to the Speakers party. The Speaker asked Henry if he was going to Rome & his answering there seemed too much opposition in the House he answered that it was vulgar & absurd & ought to be put down–
