13 March 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 13th March [1883]. Henry helped me to write to Lady Ely & I had some difficulty in copying it out fair as so many people came in. Merthyr & Theo called as they were in town for a few hours. Maria came to take Ola off with her. Alice remained to go on to stay with Blanche. Henry went out in the morning to see Mr Goschen & to talk to him about this affair of Rome, but he returned to lunch & then afterwards went by appointment to see Gladstone—he received Henry very politely & all that but nothing satisfactory came of the interview. I drove out with Alice leaving cards & we payed Lady Dickson a visit & found her at home. We dined with Sir Erskine & Lady May. Sir Rowland Blennerhassett took me to dinner & Henry took in his wife a charming Bavarian lady with whom I also made friends. Mrs Burr called on us in the afternoon & was very vehement in trying to persuade Henry not to go away to Venice as he says he will directly after Easter.
