2 April 1883 — Dowlais House, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan
Monday. 2nd April [1883]. Mr & Mrs Clark & Master Goff, Henry & I went off by a morning train to see their house near Llantrisant called Talygarn. We went by train, changing at Newbridge. We got there abt 11.30 & drove to the house which is not yet quite finished & is not furnished. Since I was there in 1868 it has been transformed from a low cottage to a baronial mansion. There is a great hall like a chapel which Mrs Clark did not care for as she said “she could not look out of the window.” There is a fine staircase with stained glass windows & Mr Clark amuses himself being his own architect & having a great turn for arranging & adapting things. We lunched in the servants hall a room quite nice eno’ for a boudoir– Mrs C. had brought over some cold lunch to wh we did justice. Then I wandered abt in the garden picking flowers till it was time to return by the train to Dowlais which we reached abt 5.
