1 April 1883 — Dowlais House, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan
Sunday. 1st April [1883]. I went to church with the Clarks & Diceys & we sat in the old high pew wh is the only one remaining the little church having been re-seated & enlarged by Mr Clark & an organ put in– The vicar was rather high church & had surpliced choir &c wh would have made our poor old parson Canon Jenkins turn in his grave. On reading over the elaborate & rather overdone tablet put up to my father’s memory just over the old pew I was somewhat startled to realize that it is nearly 100 years since my own father was born (1785)– How small it makes time feel. After lunch Henry & I & the Diceys took a walk with Mrs Clark through the old garden to the reservoir which supplies the works with water– On the way home Mrs Clark & I called on Mrs Martin whose husband was in the works in my father’s time & whose son is now manager at £200 year.
