16 April 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 16th [April 1883]. Home writing & talking to Temmy. Mrs Poynter came to lunch but had to leave directly after. I drove with Blanche in afternoon & she took me to try on my bonnet at Melanie’s wh we found hideous & had to have altered. I went to tea with Blanche & then went late to see Susan Hambro who had just arrived from the country & I stayed talking to her till late & went home in a hansom. Henry & I dined with Constance & Charlie to meet the Archbishop of Canterbury & Mrs Benson, Lady Taunton, Anthony Froude, Mrs Bassett & Mr Burton (MD). Froude took me in & I sat next the Archbishop. He was very pleasant & full of fun– Constance said she was afraid he was overworking himself– He answered that there was no fear of that—that others were overworking him & he was expected to settle in 5 mins: questions wh others had been unable to settle in twice as many months. Constance was in a mischievous mood & tried to shock him by telling all the curious things she had done such as driving on an omnibus by the driver, wheeling her children in a perambulator, cleaning her own windows! I said I supposed she did not expect her friends to bow to her when she drove on an omnibus—she declared she did– The Archp said No Mrs Eliot you can’t eat your cake & have it. In the evening a few people came. Temmy arrived bringing Ola– Blanche came & sang & Annie Murray & Connie played.
