21 April 1883 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 21st April [1883]. I breakfasted in bed & before I got up had a great row with Hill. I offered to raise her wages & she wd not accept it & said she would have “my wardrobe” & finally said that if she did not have it she must have £50 a year. I was very much surprised. Henry had gone down to Lady Well to see his mother’s grave & at last when he returned I told Hill I wd give her my “wardrobe” without raising her wages. Arthur & Mildred came to lunch. I did not go out at all– Lady Eastlake, Lady Lindsay, Lord Alcester, Fred Layard & his girl Ida, Sir Collingwood & Lady Dickson, Mr Smyth, Blanche all came to see me. We dined with the Hambros & came home early as they were going to an evening party.
