25 April 1883 — En route to Milan
Wednesday. 25th [April 1883]. Reached Milan at 7 in the evening not at all tired. At dinner we observed a curious looking couple dining at a little table. The gentleman wore black glass goggles. Had on an inverness cape & was reading a newspaper & picking a little food. The lady was reading a novel, picking her teeth with her fingers & eating her dinner. After a while the husband got up & left—without a word. Presently Lord & Lady Muncaster & Mr & Mrs Eric Barrington came to dinner & the Lady got up from her novel & dinner & turned out to be Lady Sykes. She & Sir Tallin had just come back from Rome. She would not stop to speak to any of us but bounced out. We hear that she has been recd into the R.C. church but Sir Tallin has not yet done so altho’ he is going to build a R.C. Cathedral in London. After dinner we got a message from Ct Mocenigo Sorranzo that he wished to see us. We found his two daughters in the reading room—they told us their father was gone to see the d’Addas as P. Pio was dead. I had not seen the girls for many years when they were quite little & I used to bathe with them at Venice. Sat & talked some time with them & then went to bed–
