2 May 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 2nd [May 1883]. I painted all morning touching up my Canaletto fan as I wanted to make a present of it to the Princess. Henry went directly after lunch to go out shopping & sight seeing with the Princess. He took me to Mrs Edens & the Stabto brought me home. At 5 surprised by a visit from Lord & Lady Alwyne Compton who have come to stay with Lady (Hamilton) Gordon at Palazzo Civran. Henry came home late having been every where with the P. & Pss who were indefatigable. Having got no cook I begged Giovanni to go in search of the one who was afraid to come. It was a pouring wet evening. We went to dine at Danieli’s with the Prince. In the evening while talking the Prince asked me abt the opening of Charles V tomb & then went on to tell me that he had had to take in hand the arrangement of all his own family vaults. He said they had been neglected & for the last 2 or 3 generations none of his family cared to occupy themselves with such a thing & the confusion, dirt & dust was dreadful. In the vaults the coffins were heaped up without name or order & he had never rested until they were all arranged & the names put on each coffin. He said his family since they came from Bavaria in 1600 had all been buried at Berlin. It was too wet to go out in the eveng so we sat talking till nearly 10 when we went home to cribbage & bed.
