28 July 1883 — Cassel | |
Saturday. 28th July [1883]. Henry went off early to the gallery. I wrote & at 11 went off to join him with Hill & Giovanni. I found him with Habich & 2 or 3 of the different directors. We went thro’ the museum on the ground floor where there are lovely clocks—works in ivory—gold & silver china amber &c. We then went to the Friederich Museum with the director Dr Pender to see the little bronze Victory which I confess I did not much admire. Then we took leave of Pender & Habich & returned to dine at the Hotel. I sat by a German Professor who told me his name was Julius Sturm—that he had just come from Wildungen baths where he had been with Dr Schliemann & I begged him to write & give Henry’s compliments to him– We got on very well & I stammered away in German & we were very friendly. We left Cassel by 4.15 train & went to Frankfurt. Got there in pouring rain at 8.25. Went to Frankfurter Hof a great new hotel where we got very good rooms. Supper in the restaurant & then to bed. | |
