31 July 1883 — Munich | |
Tuesday. 31st July [1883]. Henry went off after breakfast to the Pictures. I remained at home & wrote a lot of letters till he returned at 1 when we lunched. At a little after 2 the MacDonells came & fetched us & took us in their carriage to the Exhibition of modern art. We spent all the afternoon there & were mostly struck with the Hungarian school both for colour & form– We were horrified at the French school, the pictures of this year’s “Salon.” The English school was not represented at all. After walking abt till we were tired I went for a turn in the carriage with Mrs MacDonell & then we came back to the Hotel, dressed for dinner & went off to dine with the MacDonells who live a little out of the town beyond the Gate. We only found the tutor Mr Marshall there– We spent the evening & returned abt 11. | |
