1 August 1883 — Munich
Wednesday. 1st August [1883]. We were preparing to go off at 10 to the picture gallery when Duca di Sermoneta who is staying in this hotel sent to ask if we wd receive him & then he came down to us & sat some time chatting. He regretted very much Henry’s not going as Ambr to Rome– We went off to the gallery & stayed there till past 12 when I went off in a cab to call on my old friend Bss Reitzenstein née Emily Divett. I had entirely lost sight of her since her marriage which took place a year before mine. She was somewhat changed & has been a widow 6 years. Her husband having committed suicide & her 3 children having been born dead. Her hair however, was not like mine, white & so she did not look old– We talked much of old times & exchanged questions abt each other’s families & then I left her & went on to the MacDonells where we lunched & where Henry met me. After lunch Henry went off for a walk with Mr MacDonell & I sat & chatted with his wife & we talked over our different grievances against Lord Granville & the like. At 4 she gave me tea & then we walked together into the town. It came on to rain & so we walked under the arcades until we thought it had blown over when we set off again to the hotel. It came on to pour & we had to get a cab. We happened to meet Mr MacD. & his boy so they got into the cab also & they drove me to the hotel & left me there. We dined at 7.30– Cribbage.
