3 August 1883 — Munich | |
Friday. 3rd August [1883]. Went with Henry to the Antiquity Museum. There are some of his Assyrian Marbles there in a little court built on purpose & decorated with Assyrian patterns. There are some very interesting Roman sculptures & not too much of it. We were much amused at a notice over the door of the Museum that young persons under 7 would not be admitted. I suppose for fear of their morals! We walked on to the Old Pinacothek & went thro the room where there are the old German & dutch pictures & then took a cab & went to the National Museum on purpose to see Benevenuto Cellini’s hammer & his medal which had escaped our notice the other day. It certainly is very fine—the hammer– We did not remain there long but returned to the hotel & lunched. Abt 3 the MacDonells came for us & we took a walk with them. We did a little shopping & we went to the Glass shop & bought some specimens of Munich glass & then went to see where the composition gold frames are made– We were told they are chiefly made of rabbits skins pounded down. They are very cheap & handsome too. Came back to the hotel & dressed for dinner & went to dine with the MacDonells & met there the French Ch: d’Affaires Monsr Mariani– Very agreeable little man. | |
