4 August 1883 — Munich
Saturday. 4th August [1883]. Wrote letters & abt 11 went out walking with Mrs MacDonell who called for me. We went about in the market—shopping a little till past 12 when we got a cab & Mrs MacDonell dropped me at the hotel & then returned home. After lunch I went out to buy some books & returned in ½ hour—& wrote letters while waiting for the MacD’s who promised to come for us. They did not come & it rained hard. When it ceased Henry & I went off to the new Rathhaus to see the great picture by Pelotti who lines all one side of the hall where the sittings are held. It is rather harmonious in colour tho’ rather overcrowded with figures. The building is handsome in the Gothic style. We walked in the town & back to the Hotel, dressed & went to dine with Sir Henry & Lady Howard & met the MacDs & Lady Blennerhassett who is a Bavarian & lives here most of the year. She is a very clever & writes books & articles & is bright in conversation. Her husband is an Irish M.P. Lady Howard is a German lady but talks English perfectly & seemed very kind & pleasant. We had a good dinner. After dinner Lady Blennerhassett went into the smoking room with the gentlemen & smoked & talked. We came home abt 10 & played cribbage.
