8 August 1883 — Innsbruck
Wednesday. 8th [August 1883]. We went by 10.30 train to Niederdorff. We had to change carriages at Franzensfeste & there we dined. We got to Niederdorff at abt 3.30– Took a walk in the woods. We found Mr Malcolms coachman Giuseppe waiting at the station & the Master of “The Post” where we stayed the night. We had tea supper at 7.30. The landlady brought out in triumph a tea urn but we cd not make the lamp of it burn. She said it had only once been used for the King of Saxony & she had not seen how it was done. We took a walk through the village to see the destruction caused by the floods of last autumn—13 houses had been carried away besides others shaken– They were hard at work building up the banks of the torrent. The Post is one of the few remaining old German inns. A panel of each bedroom door was painted in sepia with scriptural subjects—very quaint & not badly done. The landlord & lady worked hard & said they had had the inn for 5 years & their parents had had it before them.
