9 August 1883 — Niederdorf
Thursday. 9th August [1883]. We got up early, breakfasted outside the house—under the verandah & left in Malcolm’s carriage abt ¼ to 9. We went first to Innichen where we stopped to see an old Romanesque church—very curious & well preserved. It was open & there was no one abt so we had the pleasure of seeing it all quietly & taking our time. We then drove back again past Toblach with its big hotel to Landro & stopped at Schluderbach. We got there at 11.30 & had lunch at 12. We found room had been kept for us but they were very full– Frau Plörner said that last night they had had 72 people & had had to make up beds every where. After lunch I met Mme & Mlle Bombelles whom we had met at Venice. Herr Plorner advised us to take a walk to what he called Edouard’s Fels & he took us a little way to put us on the road. We found it a lovely walk & a good climb of ¾ hour & at the top a bench & table from wh was a lovely view of Monte Cristallo. We sat there talking for a couple of hours & did not get down to the hotel before 5. Had some supper– Played cribbage in our bedroom till bed time.
