10 August 1883 — Schluderbach
Friday. 10th August [1883]. We got up early & after breakfast started in a little carriage with 2 horses for the Lake of Misurina up a little valley by a very steep road. The weather was fine but cloudy & so we could not see the tops of the mountains & everything looked grey. When we got to the plateau where the lake was we found just one little inn—where we got some luncheon—very civil people but very hard beef—good eggs & sardines preserved. We sat outside near the Lake to have our coffee. We took a long walk & we dawdled about waiting & hoping for the sunshine—but the sun only half came thro’ the clouds & was quickly hidden again & then it rained a little. Abt 3 o’cl we made up our minds to try our luck & to go on to Tre Croce. We went by a very rough road & as our carriage had hardly any springs we got well jolted. The clouds still hung about the mountains & we could only see peeps of the tops now & then. When we got to Tre Croce we got out of our carriage & sat on an arbour & I had very good coffee & cream & Henry had beer & we had a talk with the man who keeps a little kind of wine shop. His little girl gave me flowers & mountain strawberries wh I took back with me for supper. We gave up all hopes of the view & returned to Schluderbach. Supper, cribbage & bed.
