23 August 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 23rd [August 1883]. Painted all morning. It was very hot; after lunch I went up to my room got “Life of Machiavelli” in wh I am very much interested & lay on the sofa to read. The heat soon overcame me & I fell into a doze wh was rudely broken in to by Hill who came to say that it was nearly 5 & that Henry had been to the station & had brought Mrs Ross & her maid Theresa who is sister to our Regina. We had tea in the studio & I put up some flowers Mrs Ross sent me from Florence. After dinner we went out to the Piazza & had ices. The band was playing.
