16 September 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 16th September [1883]. Margie & I went to church & I played the harmonium. After lunch Henry took Mr Rate & Margie to see pictures & churches. Alice was better & got up & I went down to her sitting room & sat with her & read to her a bit– Mrs Brown came to call—gave her tea & showed her the flowers I had—then Henry, Margie, Mr Rate & I went out for a row to the Giudecca & round by the Grand Canal home. While we were at dinner there was a ring at the front door bell & in walked Rances the Spanish Minister in London– He had come to Venice this afternoon & leaves again tomorrow. We took him (Mr Rate, Henry & I) out in the gondola in the evening. There was a full moon. We met the boat of the pittori coming to the Rialto followed by a lot of gondolas. We turned & followed to hear the music & Rances was much amused. We took Rances back to his hotel & then home.
