18 September 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 18th September [1883]. Alice & I spent all the morning planting my bulbs for the winter. After tea Henry & I & Alice went out in gondola & we left cards on Lady M. Beaumont & came home abt 6. Henry went to meet the Genl. & Lady Dickson. After consulting Henry & Alice & seeing Hill looking still very ill & melancholy I told her perhaps it would be best for her not to think returning to Venice as it was evidently too much for her nerves. We dined latish. The Genl. & Lady D. arrived in very good spirits & health from Milan. I remained in the evening with Lady D, others went out.
